Cigarette smell comes from a sticky residue (including nicotine and tar compounds) deposited on walls, ceilings, doors, cabinetry, curtains, carpets, upholstery and inside the AC if smoking was heavy. Removing it means cleaning hard surfaces, washing or replacing soft ones, and sometimes sealing and repainting walls. Fragrance and ozone-style quick fixes do not remove the residue, so the smell returns. Light, recent smoke may clean out; heavy or long-term smoke (including previous-tenant smoke) often needs professional treatment plus some material replacement.
Key points
- The smell is a physical residue on surfaces, not just 'in the air'.
- Work top-down: ceilings and walls, then fixtures, then soft furnishings, then floors.
- Washable fabrics can be laundered; curtains, carpet underlay and cushion foam often cannot be cleaned through.
- Heavy or previous-tenant smoke usually needs professional treatment and, in places, repainting or replacement.
Where cigarette residue sits
Smoke residue is carried on tiny particles and condensing vapours that settle on every exposed surface and work into porous ones. In a typical Dubai apartment that means: painted walls and ceilings (especially above where someone sat to smoke), the tops of doors and door frames, inside and on top of wall cabinets and wardrobes, light fittings and switch plates, curtains and blinds, sofa fabric and cushion foam, carpets and rugs, and — if smoking was frequent and near a return-air grille — the AC filter, blower and ducts.
The order to clean
- Ventilate and remove ashtrays, packaging and any obviously contaminated small items.
- Ceilings and walls — wipe or wash with an appropriate hard-surface cleaner, working top to bottom.
- Fixtures — doors, frames, skirting, cabinetry inside and out, switch plates, light fittings, window frames and sills.
- Soft furnishings — launder or dry-clean what you can; assess curtains, sofas and mattresses (see below).
- Floors — hard floors washed; carpets professionally cleaned, with the underlay assessed.
- AC — replace the filter; have the system checked if the smell is stronger when it runs.
Walls, ceilings and paint
Light residue often washes off painted surfaces. Heavier or older residue can bleed back through fresh paint, which is why a stain-blocking primer or sealer is used before repainting a heavily affected room. If the paint is old, flaking or has absorbed a lot of residue over years, washing may not be enough and repainting after sealing is the practical route.
Soft furnishings
- Curtains and cushion covers — launder or dry-clean per the label; heavy smoke may not come out of some fabrics.
- Sofas and armchairs — professional upholstery cleaning can help, but the cushion foam holds odor and cannot be cleaned through; badly affected pieces may need replacing. See sofa odor removal.
- Carpet — cleanable, but the underlay traps smoke; if the smell persists after cleaning, replacing carpet and underlay is often the fix. See carpet smell removal.
- Mattresses — foam holds smoke; a heavily affected mattress is usually replaced.
The AC
If the cigarette smell is noticeably worse when the AC starts, smoke has been drawn into the system. Replace the filter and have the coil, blower and ducts checked. Deeper HVAC-hygiene guidance is on DubaiACDuctCleaning.com; duct cleaning is not automatically required — it depends on what an inspection finds.
When cleaning is not enough
Consider professional odor treatment plus targeted replacement when: the apartment was smoked in heavily for a long time; it is previous-tenant smoke you inherited; the smell persists after a full clean; or it is concentrated in materials you cannot clean through (curtains, carpet underlay, sofa foam, mattress). See previous-tenant smell and how professional odor removal works. No responsible provider should promise permanent removal — the honest goal is to bring it down to no longer noticeable and keep it there.
If you are viewing a property that smells of smoke, ask whether walls can be sealed and repainted and whether carpet, curtains and any affected upholstery will be replaced — that is usually what it takes.
