How to Remove Persistent Cooking & Curry Smell From a Dubai Home

Cooking odor becomes a problem when grease-carried residue builds up on cabinets, walls, ceilings and soft furnishings — especially in open-plan Dubai apartments.

Quick answer

Strong, lasting cooking smell comes from an oily residue that carries odor compounds and sticks to surfaces: kitchen cabinet doors and interiors, the wall and ceiling above the hob, the range hood, nearby curtains, and — in open-plan layouts — the living-room sofa and rugs. Removing it means degreasing hard surfaces, laundering or cleaning soft ones, checking the extraction, and sometimes sealing and repainting. Air fresheners do nothing about the residue. Previous-tenant cooking odor is treated the same way, as a whole-kitchen residue.

Key points

  • The smell rides on a grease film — degrease surfaces rather than spray over them.
  • Cabinet doors and interiors, the wall/ceiling above the hob, and the range hood hold the most.
  • In open-plan homes, living-room fabrics absorb cooking odor too.
  • A recirculating or unused range hood lets residue build — ducted extraction prevents it.

Where cooking residue accumulates

Frying, grilling and long simmering release fine oil droplets that carry odor and settle on cooler surfaces. The heaviest deposits are on the cabinet doors and the wall and ceiling directly above and beside the hob, inside the range hood and its filters, and on the tops of wall cabinets. From there it spreads: cabinet interiors, the fridge exterior, window frames, and in open-plan layouts the curtains, sofa fabric and rugs in the connected living area.

The cleaning order

  1. Remove and clean or replace the range-hood grease filters (charcoal filters if recirculating).
  2. Degrease the wall and ceiling above the hob, then the wider kitchen walls and ceiling.
  3. Clean cabinet doors, handles and interiors — inside included, as residue collects there.
  4. Wipe the fridge exterior, window frames, skirting and the backsplash.
  5. Wash the floor last.
  6. Move to the connected living area: curtains, upholstery, rugs.

Curtains, sofas and rugs

Launder or dry-clean kitchen and living-room curtains. Have upholstery and rugs professionally cleaned if the smell is in them. As with smoke, cushion foam holds odor and cannot be cleaned through — for a badly affected sofa in an open-plan kitchen-living room, replacement of foam or the piece may be the practical answer. See sofa odor removal.

The range hood and ventilation

A recirculating range hood (charcoal filter, no external duct) returns the moisture and much of the odor to the room, so residue builds steadily. One that is ducted to outside removes it. If your kitchen has a persistent cooking-smell problem and a recirculating hood, adding proper ducted extraction is the durable fix. Run the hood before you start cooking and for ten minutes after.

Previous-tenant cooking odor

If you have moved into a home with a strong inherited curry or cooking smell, treat the whole kitchen as a grease-residue job: degrease every surface including cabinet interiors, clean or replace the range-hood filters, and seal and repaint the wall and ceiling above the hob if the residue is heavy. See previous-tenant smell. Professional odor treatment can help where the residue is extensive.

Do not assume the whole property needs treating. If the cooking smell is confined to the kitchen and the immediately connected space, a thorough degrease and filter change often resolves it.
